May 23- Easy Readers/First Chapter Books and Concept Books
There is a Bird on Your Head! By: Mo Willems. Ages 4-8. This book begins with one bird on elephant's head, then leads to a whole family with a nest! Piggie finds a simple solution for his friend, and tells him to ask the bird family to leave; only to have them nest on his head! The illustrations and caption colors make it easy and fun for kids to follow along with!
I am Going! By: Mo Willems. Ages 4-8. Another book in Willem's lovable series, Piggie tries to part ways with his friend Gerald the elephant. Gerald becomes hysterical and wonders who he will skip with and wear hats with! However, Piggie reassures his friend that he was just going to eat lunch, which they then share together! Again, very entertaining for kids and easy to follow along!
Hop on Pop By: Dr. Seuss. Grade: K-2. An easy reader blog would be incomplete without at least one Dr. Seuss book. This rhyming story, also features great and colorful illustrations. I think it would make a great read aloud for beginning readers, trying to grasp the basics of reading. Although not the most cohesive story, the rhymes and pictures make it a great read!
Clifford the Big Red Dog By: Norman Bridwell. Ages 5-7.
This wonderful book series is great for beginning readers. Emily
Elizabeth introduces her lovable, big red dog Clifford. He sometimes
causes trouble because he is so big, however she would not trade him for
any other dog in the neighborhood. I think this is great for kids
because they can really connect, especially if they have a love for
animals. The series is a great way to get kids to not only become better
readers, but to develop a true love of reading.
Joe and Betsy the Dinosaur By: Lillian Hoban. Grade: Level 1 book- Preschool- grade 1.
This book is about Joe and his friend Betsy the dinosaur. They live in
a cave together and play with all their other friends during the nice
weather. However, when winter comes none of their friends are out! They
then go on an adventure to find them, but the Lion family will not let
them in and they wake up the bear family that is trying to sleep! I
think that this easy reader/ adventure would be great to get boys to
really enjoy reading!
Mercy Watson to the Rescue By: Kate DiCamillo. Grade: K-2.
This book is a part of another lovable series for children to enjoy!
The story begins with Mercy, a pig, trying to sneak into bed with her
parents. However, when the bed begins to fall through the floor, Mercy
must seek the help of her not so friendly neighbor! Her parents are
saved by the fire department and they all enjoy her favorite meal,
buttered toast. This was a fun story with great illustrations; the
perfect read along book!
Dr. Seuss's ABC By: Dr. Seuss. Grade: K-2. Another
Dr. Seuss classic is on the shelves of many children that are just
beginning to read. The book goes through each letter in the alphabet,
from A-Z and that are both big and small. It also gives examples of
things that start with that letter and provides colorful illustrations! I
think this is great for beginning readers!
Zelda and Ivy- The Runaways By: Laura McGee Kvasnosky. Grade K- 2.
This
easy reader, small chapter book, tells the story of sisters Zelda and
Ivy. The first story outlines how they runaway from home to the backyard
only to return inside a short time later. In the second chapter they
bury a time capsule with their most precious positions, but dig it up
shortly after because they desperately want their things back, and the
last describes them using their imagination and making a concoction with
a friend. All the stories have great illustrations, and are stories
that kids can truly connect to! Also, the writing style is still
relatively easy, so kids can really enjoy and improve their skills.
Bink & Gollie By: Kate Dicamillo and Alison McGhee. Grade K-2. Another
loveable tale of two sisters, is another great read with amazing
illustrations. This book also comes with three different stories: one
where Bink refuses to take off her elaborate socks for pancakes, another
when Gollie uses her imagination to climb a mountain but Bink
constantly interrupts her, and the last when Bink gets a fish, and then
sets him free. The stories illustrate that sisters often fight, but
they'll always be sisters! These are great stories that kids, especially
girls, will love to read!
